Chapter Fourteen

Vex

Starry held my hand until Granger’s fake raspberry scent disappeared. I blinked all through Chester’s speech, unable to wrap my head around most of what he said. Leo had spoken of Granger on the train, but what he failed to tell me was the wolf was a hothead who wanted a fight.

“Maybe he didn’t know,” my fox chimed into my thoughts. “He’s young. Maybe he didn’t know Granger would ---- whatever tonight was. Speaking of – we linked up magic with Starry the way we could do with our relatives.”

“He’s family now,” I shrugged.

Linking magic with Starry was the least weird thing that happened since coming into the club. That was a reflex. We were two witches side by side. Grabbing hands to make an unmovable shield was the natural thing to do. It didn’t always work. It was more difficult to link up with new people or strangers, but Starry’s magic didn’t feel strange to me at all. His magic felt like a softer version of Leo with little starbursts included at no extra price. Still, there was shit Leo, and I needed to talk about. They arrested Granger, but most guys like him don’t give up. I saw that enough in Chicago every time I ventured out.

“We’ll talk after the party, okay?” Leo whispered in my ear as the music came from the speakers.

It was late enough that most folks took their little kids home or tucked them into beds deep inside the club’s belly.

“Let’s just dance. We’re not going to get a second mating feast, and life’s always throwing shit at someone,” Leo grinned at me.

He was right, of course, on both accounts and the magic pull of our true-mate response wanted me to dance. I held out my hand to Leo, and he took it. His skin was warm against mine as he led me onto the dance floor. Slowly as the music pounded through my veins, I forgot about Granger and his almost attack for a little while. I forgot about him and everyone else altogether as our bodies ground together on the dance floor. Sometimes we kissed. Sometimes we pressed our foreheads together as if we could look into each other’s souls that way, and maybe we could if we gazed long enough.

Sometime after midnight, we stumbled out of the club with Liam, Starry, Manuel, and a wolf omega who hung off his arm. The guy was short with blonde hair, and come morning, I wouldn’t remember his hookup’s name. Liam slid Manuel something, and the streetlight danced off the tell-tale shiny packaging. At least they weren’t making babies. Manuel didn’t have a car in the city, and the omega had a few drinks, so we waited with them until their rideshare came.

I hadn’t touched any of the champagne flutes or beer or anything else getting passed around. Leo hadn’t either. He sniffed both Liam and Starry, and they sniffed him, too, before we all got into separate vehicles and headed out.

“We’re you guys drunk testing each other?” I asked, laughing as Leo reached over to fasten my seatbelt.
